How to Care for Your Contact Lens

contact lens

There are a couple of things you should know if you are considering to get contact lenses. While contact lenses are more convenient to wear than eye glasses, they need special care and requirements that you need to be aware of. If you have seen people wearing contacts, they may make it look easy and good, easily popping and removing them. However, being aware and taking good care of your contact lenses can be beneficial to your eye health.

Take a trip to your doc

Your eye doctor can not only assist you in choosing what type of contacts to wear, but can also help decide if you’re a suitable candidate for contact lens wear.

Additionally, eye doctors can help you find contact lenses that will work well with your special vision needs, lifestyle, and yes, personal style. There are hard or soft lenses, daily to monthly disposables, cosmetic lenses, and even crazy lenses fit for holidays (like Halloween). Your eye doctor will also prescribe what methods of application and removal that works best for you, and point you to an Optician (a person licensed to make contact lenses and eyeglasses) for your contacts fitment.

Several years ago, astigmatism made it difficult for patients to wear contacts. Even if they could, they were uncomfortable and costly. Now, affordable contact lenses for astigmatism are available; one popular and high-quality brand is Acuvue contact lens.

Caring for your contacts

Once you have been prescribed with the right contact lenses for you, it’s time to know how to properly care for them.

Wash your hands thoroughly before applying or removing your contacts. Since contact lenses need to be cleaned after each use, rinse them in saline, and store them in another fresh, clean saline solution to keep them moist.

If you suddenly develop eye infection, chuck away your contacts and get new ones. If they feel uncomfortable or you experience burning, your contact lenses may be dry. Apply some specially-formulated eye drops (prescribed for contact lens wearers) to get relief. Remove your contact by gently swiping the lens to the side, then pinching it to extract it. Check it for tiny ruptures or debris. Clean the contact with the saline solution and re-insert it with your index finger. Dispose contact lenses that have a tear and acquire new ones.

Once you get the hang of it, wearing and caring for your contacts will come easily. Placing some special care to your contact lenses enable you to get the most out of them.
